What is an Inverter Generator?

quiet generatorInverter generators work by creating DC power and then converting it to AC use.  This has a significant advantage over the traditional gas-powered standard generator in the sense that the inverter generator creates power and then essentially stores it for continual use rather than having to run constantly as a normal gas mechanical generator does.

Typically old school mechanical generators run at 3600 rpm regardless of power being used – which means they run louder and are constantly using fuel to keep themselves producing steady AC power.   These types of generators can produce large amounts of continuous power but the downside is that they are loud and have to run a full capacity constantly.  They also produce less ” clean ” power which has spikes and drops in the current which makes them less than idea for sensitive electronics.

Inverter Generators work by creating power in a DC format and then as output is required, converts it to clean AC power free of spikes of fluctuation thanks to a different type of alternator.

The popularity of inverter generators has driven down the price of their louder mechanical cousins.  On average inverter generators are 2 to 3 times more expensive than standard old school ones.   Never the less there are some great values out there as shown below.
